Introduction:

Indonesia’s Mount Merapi volcano on Java island erupted, sending up a cloud of ash and fear of river of lava flowing down the slopes.

Highlights:

  • The 2,963 meter (9,721 feet) high Merapi is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes and is already on the country’s second highest alert level.
  • This was the biggest lava flow of the Mount Merapi.
  • Sound of eruption was heard 30 kilometers away.
  • The last major eruption of the Merapi was in 2010 that had killed 347 people.

About Mount Merapi

  • The Mount Merapi is the Fire Mountain in Indonesia and Java.
  • It is an active stratovolcano that is located on the border between the Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces, Indonesia.
  • It is considered as the most active volcano in Indonesia and is erupted regularly since 1548.
  • It is the youngest group of volcanoes in southern Java that is situated at a subduction zone of the Indo-Australian Plate and Sunda Plate.
  • At this subduction zone, the Indo-Australian Plate subducts under the Sunda Plate.

Pacific Ring of Fire

  • The region sits around rim of the Pacific Ocean which is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
  •  It is a horseshoe-shaped belt which is about 40,000 km in length.
  • It includes the Pacific coasts of South America, North America and Kamchatka apart from the western Pacific Ocean areas.
