Introduction:

India has been evaluated in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2025 and ranks 10th among over 60 countries. This evaluation assesses efforts to combat climate change and the report was released during the UN climate conference in Baku.

Key Evaluation Metrics

The CCPI measures three main areas – emissions, renewable energy, and climate policies. Each country is rated based on its performance in these categories. The top three positions remain unoccupied. No country met the required standards across all metrics.

India’s Emissions Profile

India’s per capita emissions stand at 2.9 tons of CO2, which is lower than the global average of 6.6 tons. Despite being the third-largest emitter globally, India aims for net-zero emissions by 2070.

India has made considerable progress in renewable energy. The country is focusing on large-scale solar projects. The Rooftop Solar Scheme has also gained traction. India plans to achieve 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Energy Efficiency and Electric Vehicles

Advancements in energy efficiency standards are notable. The adoption of electric vehicles, particularly two-wheelers, is increasing. These initiatives contribute to reducing overall emissions.

India still heavily relies on coal for energy production. Plans to increase coal production pose challenges. This reliance affects India’s ability to improve its ranking further.

Comparison with Other Countries

Among G20 nations, India is one of the top performers, alongside the U.K. The U.K. benefits from phasing out coal and halting new fossil fuel projects. In contrast, China ranks 55th, and the U.S. is 57th.

Countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Russia rank lowest due to their oil and gas production. Argentina’s ranking dropped after political changes regarding climate policy.
