Introduction:
Indian Railways is advancing rapidly in electrifying its Broad Gauge railway lines. In 2024, approximately 97% of the network is electrified, which was shared by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a Lok Sabha response.
Electrification Milestones
Since the fiscal year 2014-15, around 45,200 kilometres of Broad Gauge tracks have been electrified. The pace of electrification has surged dramatically. It increased from an average of 1.42 kilometres per day (2004-14) to about 19.7 kilometres per day in 2023-24.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
Electric trains offer substantial environmental advantages. They are approximately 70% cheaper to operate than diesel trains. This shift contributes to reduced carbon emissions and promotes sustainable transportation.

Reliable Power Supply
The electrification system is supported by a robust power supply. Indian Railways has established multiple backup options. These include connections to the national grid and additional power sources at substations.
Indian Railways aims for 100% electrification across its network. The goal is to become a global leader in “Green Railways.” This initiative includes cutting carbon emissions to zero.
Northeast Frontier Railway Initiatives
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is a key player in this electrification mission. NFR is actively working to electrify all remaining Broad Gauge routes in its jurisdiction. Their efforts are crucial to achieving the broader objectives of Indian Railways.
