ARAI developed charger for Electric Vehicles.

Introduction;

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has developed its indigenous charger for electric vehicles (EV) in order to give a push to EV ecosystem in India.

Highlights:

• According to ARAI Director, Reji Mathai, in order to promote EVs, infrastructure for charging is important.
• Currently, in India, mobility chargers are imported. So, ARAI focused on developing these indigenous chargers. These chargers are cost-effective and boost the local economy.
• ARAI has developed indigenous technology for EV charger called AC001. It has been taken up for manufacturing and promotion by the Bharat Electronics.
• Charging points will be set up by Bharat Electronics while the parts for EV charger systems like Type 1, Type 2, CCS & CHAdeMO will be manufactured locally.
• Apart from that, ARAI is setting up its new centre in Takwe because, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistant System) vehicles and cylinder testing centres requires dedicated space.
• Investments of around Rs 500 crore will be made in a phased manner in next 3-4 years to set up this centre.
• ARAI is currently negotiating with Telangana and Kerala governments to set up such centres.

Cost of the chargers

• Cost of the EV chargers is expected to be in between Rs 50000 to Rs 60000.
• ARAI recently signed a deal with Bharat Electronics Limited on EV chargers. As per the deal, ARAI will provide the complete know-how of the charges while Bharat Electronics will manufacture them.

Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT) 2021

• SIAT 2021 will be organised by ARAI in association with SAEINDIA and SAE International (U.S.).
• It will be held from September 29 to October 1, 2021, under the theme ‘Redefining Mobility for the Future’.
