The State of India’s Environment 2020 is published by the Centre for Science and Environment it covers forests, wildlife, agriculture, rural development, water and sanitation and climate change related aspects.
Highlights of the report:
- More than 50 lakh internal displacements took place in India in 2019 and this is the highest in the world.
- One on five displacements caused by disasters happened in India.
- Around 19 major events have claimed 1,357 lives on 2019.
- Floods caused by the south-west monsoon led to 26 lakh displacements.
- Cyclone Fani alone led to 18 lakh displacements, followed by Cyclone Vayu and Bulbul .
- The drought conditions created 63,000 displacements.
- State wise ranking was made on water resources and management and environment.
- National average on governance of environment was 5.16 on 10.
- Punjab had a score of 5.2 .
- There were over 45 crore migrants in the country at the time of disasters, with the vast majority migrating within their own State.
- In 2011, over 1.7 crore new migrants had moved for employment purposes, mostly from rural to urban areas.
- India’s ranking in terms of Sustainable Development Goals has come down to 114 in 2019 from 115 in 2018.
