Introduction:

In September 2024, researchers announced the discovery of a new species of water flea, named Bryospilus (Indobryospilus) bharaticus n. sp., at Korigad Fort near Pune. This species is notable as it is the first of its kind found in Tropical Asia. The research marks the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats, an area known for its unique ecosystems.

About Bryospilus bharaticus

Bryospilus bharaticus belongs to the crustacean group. Water fleas are small aquatic animals that typically inhabit rivers, ponds, and pools. This species has evolved specific adaptations for life in semi-terrestrial environments. These adaptations allow it to thrive in the water films found on mosses.

Physical Characteristics

Evolutionary Significance

The ancestors of Bryospilus bharaticus are believed to have existed on the Indian subcontinent before the breakup of the prehistoric landmass Gondwanaland, around 200 million years ago. This connection points to the evolutionary history of the region and suggests that it may harbour other ancient species.

Environmental Concerns

The research indicates that the presence of such sensitive species is a sign of pristine habitats. Human disturbances pose threat to these ecosystems. The study emphasises the importance of protecting these unique environments to preserve their biodiversity.
