Introduction:

Indore, recognized as India’s cleanest city, is making strides in sustainability, and is set to become the first zero-waste airport in the country on December 22. This initiative focuses on comprehensive waste management, recycling waste generated by both the airport and its aircraft.

Waste Management System

The airport has implemented a complete waste management system. This system will recycle waste from planes, shops, gardens, and toilets. Wet waste will be transformed into fertilizer, contributing to a circular economy.

4R Principle

The zero-waste project adheres to the 4R principle – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Restore. This framework aims to minimize waste generation while maximizing resource recovery. The project not only reduces waste but also promotes environmental sustainability.

By recycling waste, the airport will eliminate the need to pay the Municipal Corporation for waste disposal. The production of fertilizer from wet waste will generate revenue, enhancing the airport’s economic viability.

Recycling Plant

A 3,000-square-foot recycling plant has been established to manage waste effectively. This facility will handle waste from various sources, ensuring a streamlined recycling process. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjurapuram Rammohan Naidu will inaugurate the plant on December 22.Traffic Growth

With the reopening of the old terminal, passenger traffic at Indore Airport is expected to rise. The airport is already ranked as the fourth-best in India, surpassing major airports in Delhi and Hyderabad in terms of passenger facilities.

Collaborative Efforts

The success of the zero-waste initiative is attributed to the collaboration of multiple stakeholders. Contributions from Safai Mitras, airport staff, and Indigo Airlines, which supported the recycling plant through its CSR fund, were very important. The Airport Authority, AAS, and Indore Municipal Corporation also played crucial roles in this achievement.
