Over 90% Indians Want Green Policies, Climate Action.

Introduction:

A large study called “Climate Change in the Indian Mind, 2023” shows that a lot of people in India are worried about climate change. The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and the Centre for Voting Opinion & Trends in Election Research (CVoter) did the poll in September and October 2023. The results show that 91% of those who answered agree that global warming is real.

Public Perception and Concern

The study shows a lot of worry about the effects of climate change. 59% of those who answered said they are “very worried.” 52% of people agree that human actions are the main cause of global warming, while 38% say that natural changes in the environment are to blame.

Perceived Risks and Effects

A lot of people are worried about the risks of global warming: 83% think it will hurt plants and animals. 82% are afraid for Indian people. – A big part of the population thinks that severe weather changes, like extreme heatwaves and storms, will happen. 71% of those who answered think that global warming has a big effect on their local weather, and 76% think that it has a big effect on the monsoons.

Policy Support and Governmental Expectations

People have strong opinions about what the government does and how it does it: a large majority (78%+) say that the Indian government should do more to fight global warming. About 86% of people strongly support policies that aim to reach Net Zero emissions by 2070, as agreed upon at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference.
