Introduction:
The latest series of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report has highlighted that without immediate emissions reductions across all sectors, it would be difficult to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Overview:
- The report also stated that to keep the temperature checked to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the global emission of greenhouse gas has to peak before 2025 and by 2030 it must be reduced by 43 percent.
- The report highlights that even if greenhouse gas emission is checked it is possible that the temperature will temporarily exceed the threshold but it could return below the mark by this century’s end.
What does the report say about coal-fired plants?
- The report highlights that by 2050 all unabated coal-fired power plants need to be shut down or else it would be difficult to maintain the global temperature rise limit to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
- The global use of coal needs to fall by at least 95 percent by 2050.
Why was the report’s publication delayed?
The report’s publication was delayed as the rich nations wanted the text to be diluted on climate financing for the small countries and developing nations.
Highlight on financing for climate change mitigation
- The report highlighted that the annual private and public financing for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change increased by 60 percent from 2013 to 2020.
- In recent years, these gains have slowed down.
