Introduction:

Every year on September 22, World Rhinoceros Day is celebrated across the world. The World Rhinoceros Day was announced by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2010. The day celebrates the animal and encourages people to take steps for its conservation.This is especially true for 5 species of Rhinos living in Asia and Africa.

Indian Rhino Vision 2020.

Launched in 2005, Indian Rhino Vision 2020 is an ambitious effort to attain a wild population of at least 3,000 greater one-horned rhinos spread over seven protected areas in the Indian state of Assam by the year 2020.

Intersting Facts about Rhinos:

  1. Rhinos have very poor eyesight. However, their poor eyesight in compensated by other senses. Rhinos can smell and hear people even when they are 30 metres away. 
  2. Rhino horn comprises keratin. Keratin is a protein which forms the basis of human hair and nails. 
  3. The African rhinoceros has a symbiotic relationship with oxpeckers. The bird sits on the back of rhinos and eats ticks. The bird also raises an alarm when it senses danger. 
  4. A group of rhinoceros is referred to as a crash. Male rhinos are called bulls while females are called cows. 
  5. Rhinos mark their territories by defecating around them.
