Introduction:
According to a survey done by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, tiger population is on rise at the rate of 6 per cent every year from 2006 and 2018.
Highlights:
- Union Minister for Environment Prakash Javadekar released the Tiger Report 2018 a day before Global Tiger Day( 29th July).
- A book titled “Tigers, Co-predators and Prey in India”and a map titled “ Securing India’s small cats” were released.
About Project Tiger:
- Project Tiger is a tiger conservation programme launched in April 1973.
- Number of Tiger Reserves in India has increased from 9 to 50.
- 70% of the total Tigers are in India
- India has expressed the intention of assisting the other 13 countries in the matter of conservation, capacity building and training in Tiger Conservation.
- The Ministry also decided to launch a water and fodder scheme within the reserves to reduce the animal- human conflict.
Salient Features of the 4th edition report:
- The All India Tiger Estimation has an abundance index of co-predators and other species.
- Sex ratio of tigers in the camera trap sites has been calculated for the first time.
- Tiger abundance within pockets in tiger reserves has been depicted for the first time.
- The National Tiger Conservation Authority has taken several steps under the ongoing Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger to address poaching, is significantly controlled now.
